Practical notes & logistics

Key things to arrange before departure.

🚅 Shinkansen
Book Tokyo to Kyoto and return separately (~¥14,000/journey). Use Klook or the JR website. The 14-day JR Pass (~€310) is not cost-effective for this trip's specific routes.
✈️ Flight to Okinawa
Kansai → Ishigaki: Peach Aviation (flypeach.com) or Jetstar Japan. Plan a late-afternoon departure on 28 Oct. Book well in advance.
🏯 Ryokan Kibune
Book several months in advance. Kaiseki dinner and breakfast included. Budget: €200–400/night. Smart dress required for dinner. Book via Jalan or Relux.
🌊 Iriomote activities
Mangrove kayaking + canyoning must be booked before departure. Recommended operators: Iriomote Osanpo Kibun (english.iriomote-osanpo.com) and Adventure PiPi (iriomote-pipi.com).
🍣 Omakase dinner
Reserve 4 to 8 weeks in advance. Budget: ~€100–200/person. Contact via tableall.com or omakase.in.
🥾 Kurama hike
The Kibune–Kuramadera–Kurama trail (~2h, moderate) requires proper walking shoes. The ryokan may have sticks to borrow.
📱 Connectivity
eSIMs: purchase before departure, activate on landing. Reliable options: Japan Experience (japan-experience.com) and Holafly (holafly.com).
🗣 Language
English is sufficient at hotels and most restaurants. Google Translate with the camera works well for Japanese menus.
Comfort package
See this trip fully built out.
The Comfort version adds hour-by-hour timings, restaurants woven into each day, full accommodation rationale, and the priority booking checklist.

Recommended accommodation

Every stop selected, with a reason why.

Stop Recommendation Why this choice
Tokyo · Arrival
3 nights · 20–22 Oct
€120–200 / night
Shinjuku / Shibuya boutique hotel
Shinjuku or Shibuya for the immediate connection from Narita (NEX direct) and the density of atmosphere on the first evening. A boutique hotel with character rather than an anonymous business hotel. For a honeymoon, the setting matters from night one.
Kyoto · City
3 nights · 23–25 Oct
€130–220 / night
Higashiyama / Gion, hotel with character
Staying in Higashiyama or Gion means Kiyomizudera, Ninenzaka and Fushimi Inari are walkable or minutes away. A hotel in a machiya (traditional townhouse) or with thoughtful Japanese décor justifies the price.
Kibune valley
2 nights · 26–27 Oct
€200–400 / night
kaiseki + breakfast included
Ryokan in Kibune ✦
The emotional heart of the trip. Two consecutive nights remove any logistical pressure and let you genuinely enjoy the onsen and the Kurama hike. Tatami room, yukata, outdoor hot spring. Book 3 to 4 months in advance.
Ishigaki
4 nights · 28 Oct–1 Nov
€80–150 / night
Hotel near the port or north coast
On Ishigaki, luxury is not the priority. You will be outdoors from morning to evening. A well-placed functional hotel (port or north coast) is plenty. Central position is essential to reach the Taketomi and Iriomote ferries easily.
Tokyo · Return
1 night · 1–2 Nov
€120–200 / night
Nakameguro / Shibuya urban hotel
Nakameguro or Shibuya for the final night, direct access to Haneda and walking distance to everything. A different neighbourhood from the first Tokyo stay, quieter and more residential, to close the trip on a different note.
Day-by-day programme

Every day, every meal, every detail.

1
Monday 20 October
🗼 Arrive, check in, first evening
Accommodation
Shinjuku / Shibuya boutique hotel
Check-in from 3pm
9:30
Land at Narita, eSIM activation
Pick up your eSIM at the arrivals counter or activate via QR code. Holafly (holafly.com) is reliable for unlimited data.
→ Narita Express to Shinjuku: 90 min, ~¥3,200. Aim to board around 11am.
13:00
Check in and drop bags
If the room is not ready, leave luggage at reception and head out.
14:00
Shinjuku Gyoen, first walk
A good place to decompress after a long flight. Entry ¥500. No heavy programme this afternoon, intentional.
19:30
Dinner at Torikizoku izakaya
Reliable izakaya chain, every dish ~¥390. Skewers, edamame, cold beer. Good for a first evening after a long journey.
→ No reservation needed on a weekday. Arrive before 8pm.
My tips
·Shinjuku Gyoen closes at 4:30pm in October. If coming straight from the airport, arrive no later than 3:30.
·Izakaya ordering: order in rounds, starting with drinks and a few skewers. That is how it is done here.
2
Tuesday 21 October
🗼 Shibuya, Meiji-jingū, Omotesandō, Ebisu
Accommodation
Shinjuku / Shibuya boutique hotel
Night 2
8:00
Convenience store breakfast
Onigiri, tamagoyaki, Boss canned coffee. Seven-Eleven or Lawson. This becomes a morning ritual quickly.
9:00
Shibuya Crossing
Best at 9am on a weekday before crowds build. Good view from Mag's Park, free, level 2 of Shibuya Scramble Square.
9:45
Meiji-jingū
20-minute walk from Shibuya. The cedar-lined approach creates an immediate shift from city to forest, free entry, allow 45 minutes.
11:30
Omotesandō · Architecture & coffee
Prada Aoyama (Herzog & de Meuron) and Tod's building (Toyo Ito). Coffee at Koffee Mameya, 4-15-3 Jingumae.
13:30
Lunch at Afuri Omotesandō
Yuzu ramen, lightly citrusy, beautiful broth. English menu. Short queue at lunch on weekdays.
→ Alternative: Kyushu Jangara (pork broth) in Harajuku, 5 min on foot.
15:00
Daikanyama T-Site and Nakameguro canal
Design bookshop at T-Site Tsutaya, then the Nakameguro canal for the late afternoon.
19:30
Dinner at Uobei Shibuya Dogenzaka
Conveyor belt sushi with tablet ordering, fast and very good value.
→ 15 to 30 min queue, no reservation. Worth it.
Restaurants today
Afuri Omotesandō
Yuzu ramen · ~¥1,200
No reservation · English menu
Uobei Shibuya Dogenzaka
Conveyor belt sushi · ~¥1,500
No reservation · Tablet ordering
My tips
·Omotesando: Most visitors stick to the main boulevard. Start from Cat Street and head toward Aoyama or Nezu Museum for a quieter, more local feel.
·Nakameguro after dark is even better. The canal-side restaurants light up and the whole street changes register.
5
Friday 24 October
⛩ Fushimi Inari, Nishiki market, Gion
Accommodation
Higashiyama / Gion boutique hotel
Night 2 of 3
6:45
Leave for Fushimi Inari
Target arrival at the torii gates by 7am. On a weekday in October it is virtually empty at this hour.
→ Keihan train from Gion-Shijo to Fushimi Inari, 5 min.
9:00
Breakfast at the foot of the shrine
Stalls open from 8:30am, inari-zushi, dango, matcha. Eat facing the torii.
10:30
Nishiki Market
130 shops along 400 metres, tofu, tsukemono pickles, dashi stock. Taste everything you can eat standing up.
12:30
Lunch at Omen Nishiki
Handmade udon, ~¥1,000. No queue if you arrive before noon.
17:30
Gion at dusk on Hanamikoji-dori
Good chances of spotting a maiko heading to an appointment around 6 to 7pm. Observe from a distance.
19:30
Dinner at Gion Kappa
Traditional Japanese cuisine, ~¥4,000, intimate atmosphere slightly off the main Hanamikoji drag.
→ Book via Tableall or by phone. English menu available.

Gion Kappa

Reserve via Tableall · English menu
My tips
·At Fushimi Inari, going 15 min past the Yotsutsuji viewpoint puts you in near-total silence. Almost everyone turns back there.
·Maiko sightings: best window is 6 to 6:30pm on Hanamikoji-dori heading south. Stand still and let them pass.

Sunday 26 October
🌿 Nara day trip, check in to Kibune ryokan ✦
Accommodation
Ryokan Kibune ✦
Night 1 of 2 · Onsen + kaiseki
8:00
Kyoto to Nara by Kintetsu train
Kintetsu from Kyoto-Kintetsu to Kintetsu-Nara, 35 min, approximately ¥760. More convenient than JR for this route.
8:45
Nara deer park, Tōdai-ji and Kasuga Taisha
~700 deer roam freely. Tōdai-ji Great Buddha: 15 metres tall, entry ¥600. Kasuga Taisha with hundreds of stone lanterns.
12:30
Lunch in Nara
Nakatanidou: mochi pounded by hand in front of you. Or Harishin for affordable kaiseki bento (~¥2,500) inside a machiya.
14:00
Return and head to Kibune
Kintetsu back to Kyoto (35 min). Eizan Railway from Demachiyanagi to Kibuneguchi (30 min), then 10-min bus or taxi up to the ryokan.
→ Large bags: send ahead via takuhaibin (~¥1,500/bag). Book at the hotel front desk the evening before.
16:30
Arrive at the ryokan, onsen
Welcome in yukata. Outdoor onsen before dinner. Water is sulfurous and hot at 42 to 44°C, which is why two nights here makes sense.
18:30
Kaiseki dinner at the ryokan
10 to 12 courses, dashi, sashimi, yakimono, nimono, gohan. Included in the ryokan price. Probably the best meal of the trip.
My tips
·The Kintetsu line drops you closer to the deer park and avoids Kyoto Station chaos.
·Takuhaibin to Kibune: book it the evening before, not the morning of. Small cost that completely changes the journey.
·Onsen etiquette: shower first, no swimwear, no towel in the water. The ryokan staff will guide you.

Days 3, 4, 6, 8–14 follow the same format. Full timings, named restaurants, logistics and tips for each day.
